The Benedicts activated Daniel Espinosa to the team this morning, a few minutes before the noon deadline. All teams are either contenders or pretenders, and this move, more than any other so far in this young season, signals that the Benedicts see themselves as contenders.
Espinosa has rocketed from being the Nationals' 3rd round pick out of Long Beach State in 2008 to the Nationals' starting lineup on September 1, 2010, with hardly a bump along the way. Espinosa is off to a .281/.364/.484 start and looks like a probable fixture at second base in Washington for years to come.
To make room for Espinosa, the Benedicts demoted Lyle Overbay, who has become an end-game spare part at this point - he is a Major League regular only because somebody has to play first base for the Pirates, and he drew the black bean. His .256/.341/.359 batting line is not impressing anyone. Overbay will cool his heels on the Benedict reserve list for the time being.
