The Benedicts completed their second trade of the young season today - this one another one-for-one deal that send eternal Phillie prospect Domonic Brown to the rebuilding Varks for St. Louis's All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday.
Holliday is just what the doctor ordered for the Benedicts flailing outfield. With Cedric Hunter demoted, Ryan Ankiel injured, Ryan Roberts remembering that he is Ryan Roberts and Seth Smith still AWOL against southpaws, the Benedict outfield was falling below first division standards. Holliday (.410/.500/.630) will give a much needed boost to the teams offense, at minimal cost for 2011.
Brown has long been a top Phillie outfield prospect. He hit an uninspiring .210-2-13-2 in 35 games last year for the team. He broke his hand this spring and is currently rehabbing in Class AAA Lehigh Valley where he is hitting .371 in four games.
Domonic Brown fans will be sad to see him go, but Holliday is just too good to pass on the team struggles to remain relevant. Holliday is a virtual lock to hit .300-25-100 - numbers Brown may see someday, but not in 2011. Holliday joins Andre Ethier and Mike Stanton for a powerful 1-2-3 punch in the Benedict outfield.
