The Houston Astros selected Connecticut outfielder George Springer with the 11th overall pick in the amateur draft earlier today. Springer is an athletic 6'3" center fielder with good power and good speed. He hit .350-12-77-31 in 64 games for the Huskies this year, and may be the most polished position player Houston has drafted with a first round pick since Lance Berkman. Springer immediately shoots to the top of Houston's prospect list.
Going into the draft, we favored University of Texas pitcher Taylor Jungmann, who was taken by Milwaukee with the next selection. Jungmann is a 6'6" right hander who projects to move quickly to the Brewer rotation. However, we cannot quarrel with Springer and we hope for the best for him and the Astro organization.
